Breitenau Monastery, a former Benedictine monastery, is located in Guxhagen-Breitenau in Hesse, Germany. The Romanesque complex is an example of the Hirsau School of Architecture in the region.

History+

The monastery of Breitenau was founded in 1113 by the Hessian Gau count Werner IV von Maden and his wife Gisela. In November 1119, Drutwin and twelve other Benedictine monks from Hirsau Monastery moved into the first buildings. Archbishop Adalbert I of Mainz appointed Drutwin as the first abbot. After the death of Werner IV in 1121, who bequeathed his entire private fortune to the monastery, the complex was placed under the protection of the Archbishop of Mainz in 1123 and received numerous privileges. The Vogtship over the monastery passed to the Landgrave of Thuringia in 1137 and later, after 1247, to the Landgraviate of Hesse.
