Kloster Broda

Broda Monastery was founded on August 18, 1170, by Duke Casimir of Pomerania, as part of the restoration of the Havelberg Cathedral Chapter. It served to Christianize the local Redarii and secure the border with neighboring Mecklenburg. The foundation was strategically favorable, as an important trade route passed through Broda. Initially, the monastery's sphere of influence covered a vast area, extending to Lake Müritz and including lands of today's cities of Neustrelitz, Burg Stargard, Neubrandenburg, and Penzlin. After Casimir's death and the transfer of large parts of the monastic territory to Brandenburg rule, its possessions significantly diminished. In 1293, it was subordinated to the Monastery of Our Lady in Magdeburg. In the mid-13th century, a donation from the Princes of Werle saved the monastery from losing its significance. In 1271, in compensation for the city of Neubrandenburg, which was founded on its land, it received patronage rights over the city's parish church. During the Reformation, the monastery was secularized in 1551 and converted into a ducal administrative office, whose lands were later managed as a leasehold estate. The actual construction of the monastery is now believed to have begun no earlier than 1240.

The former monastery grounds are located at approximately 32 m above sea level in Broda, a present-day district of Neubrandenburg in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

No above-ground structural remains of the original monastery complex are preserved today, as these were removed in the 18th century for the construction of an administrative building. However, medieval vaulted cellars of the monastery are preserved beneath the renovated tenant's house and can be visited by prior arrangement.
