Bronnbach Abbey

The foundation of Bronnbach Monastery took place in 1151 by four noble free lords. A donation of the castrum brunnebach, presumably influenced by a sermon by Bernard of Clairvaux, enabled the original settlement. In 1157, the site was moved to the Tauber Valley, and the founding convent from Waldsassen moved in. The abbey church, whose construction began in the same year, was consecrated in 1222. In the 14th century, the monastery suffered from attacks by robber knights, which led to the appointment of the Counts of Wertheim as protectors. During the Peasants' War in 1525, Bronnbach was plundered. Under Abbot Clemens Leusser, the Reformation took place in 1552, but by 1572, the monastery was recatholicized. In the Thirty Years' War, it was devastated by Swedish troops in 1631 and handed over to the Lutheran County of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Virneburg, leading to the destruction of Catholic institutions. After the secularization in 1802, the monastery became the property of the Princely House of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg, which used it until 1986. Since 1986, it has belonged to the Main-Tauber district.

Kloster Bronnbach is located in Wertheim-Bronnbach, a district of the city of Wertheim in the Main-Tauber district, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is situated at an elevation of approx. 150 m above sea level.

Today, Kloster Bronnbach houses an active monastic community, a conference center, and is the venue for numerous cultural events. The complex is well-preserved and accessible to visitors.
