St. Scholastica's Abbey, a Benedictine nunnery, is housed within the walls of Dinklage Castle in Lower Saxony.

History+

The origins of the complex date back to Ferdinandsburg Castle, first documented in 980 and destroyed in 1374. In 1394, the sons of Friedrich von Dinklage were forbidden to rebuild Ferdinandsburg, instead erecting four new castles in the vicinity. One of these was Dietrichsburg, the current Dinklage Water Castle. After several changes of ownership, Dietrichsburg came into the possession of the von Galen family in 1801, becoming their ancestral seat. In 1949, Count Christoph Bernhard von Galen transferred ownership of the castle to the Benedictine nuns.
