History+
The origins of Buxheim date back to the 7th century when Alemanni named it after the Bux stream. In the 10th century, Luitgard, presumably Bishop Ulrich's sister, donated the area to the Augsburg Cathedral with the condition of founding a collegiate church, which began its work around 1100. In 1402, the provostry was handed over to the Carthusians and received the name Maria Saal in 1406. After looting during the Peasants' War and occupation by Protestant Memmingen during the Schmalkaldic War, the monastery achieved the status of an immediate Imperial Carthusian monastery in 1548 under Habsburg protection.
