Dragalevtsi Monastery (Драгалевски манастир)
The Dragalevtsi Monastery, a significant religious building of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, is picturesquely situated on the northern foothills of the Vitosha Mountain. It is located near the Sofia district of Dragalevtsi and is dedicated to the Holy Theotokos. The monastery stands as a testament to medieval Bulgarian culture and history.
History+
The monastery's foundation is believed to date back to around 1345, attributed to Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Alexander. It was directly subordinate to the Bulgarian Patriarch and was mentioned in 1371 in the Vitosha Charter by Tsar Ivan Shishman as a royal monastery. Following the Ottoman conquest of Sofia in 1382, the monastery was destroyed. It was rebuilt in the late 15th century, after which it quickly developed into an important center for writing and culture in Bulgaria. Today, only the monastery church remains of the original complex. The oldest frescoes in the church date from 1476 and were created by artists from the Ohrid school.
