Ellwangen Abbey

Church

Around 764, the noble brothers Hariolf and Erlolf founded the Benedictine monastery of Ellwangen near an Alemannic village. It shaped the cityscape of Ellwangen in Ostwürttemberg.

History+

By 775/780, the monastery rose to the status of an imperial abbey and was placed under the protection of King Louis the Pious in 814, which confirmed its possessions and the right to freely elect its abbot. In the 9th century, the monastery experienced a period of prosperity with a large number of clerics and lay monks. Between 981 and 987, an arm relic of Saint Vitus was brought to Ellwangen, who subsequently became the new patron saint of the church and monastery.
