Engelgarten Charterhouse

The Engelgarten Monastery was founded in 1352 on a site originally known as the “Devil’s Garden.” Würzburg Bishop Albrecht von Hohenlohe renamed it and consecrated it in May 1352 to all holy angels. Johannes vom Steren had already sold the area to the Carthusians in 1348. Numerous endowments from influential patrician families, including Eberhard von Riedern and Konrad Zingel, contributed to the monastery's early prosperity. In 1397, the Burgraves of Nuremberg protected the charterhouse from destruction during a citizen uprising in Würzburg. Despite the Peasants' War in 1525, the monastery remained intact, but experienced a significant decline in the number of monks during the Reformation. During the Thirty Years' War, monks from Grünau sought refuge here before the Würzburg Carthusians themselves had to flee from the Swedes, who used the monastery as a barracks and caused considerable damage. After 1648, Engelgarten experienced a resurgence and expanded its possessions. The monastery was dissolved in 1803 as part of the secularization. The monastery church was converted into a Protestant house of worship. The buildings were later used for various purposes, including an orthopedic sanatorium and a brewery, before being demolished in 1853 to make way for the railway station of the Ludwigs-West-Bahn.

The former Engelgarten Monastery was located in the city of Würzburg in Bavaria, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 184 meters above sea level. Today, the Mainfranken Theater stands on this site.

Of the original monastery buildings, only the monastery mill, dating from the 17th century, remains today. It was rebuilt in 1961 after its destruction in World War II and is listed as a historical monument. The mill features a gable roof and is equipped with volute gables.
