Kloster Fischbach

The origins of the site date back to 1221, when a pilgrimage chapel dedicated to Saint Mary belonged to the parish of Hochspeyer. This chapel was later transferred to Kloster Höningen. In 1389, the Fischbach chapel was separated from the Hochspeyer parish, and the pastoral care was entrusted to the Höningen canons. After a period in which the rights passed to the Pauline monastery of St. Jakob on the Donnersberg and disputes arose, the Höningen conventuals were reinstated in their rights in 1449. Emerging from the Windesheim Reform Movement, Kloster Fischbach was founded in 1471. The Höningen provost Johann Soitmann initiated the settlement with six Augustinian canonesses from Lippstadt, who were to ensure the continuous care of the Marian chapel and a spiritual life. Elector Frederick I of the Palatinate assumed patronage in 1475. The monastery flourished and by 1486, sisters were sent from here to found a convent in Kleinlützel, Switzerland. During the Palatine Peasants' War in 1525, the convent was plundered and devastated. The monastery was finally dissolved in 1564.

The monastery complex was situated on a plateau of a mountain spur in the center of the present-day village of Fischbach, located in Rhineland-Palatinate, near Kaiserslautern. The plateau was surrounded by ponds and sloped steeply to the east and south. On the eastern side, strong retaining walls and pillars secured the mountain towards the valley floor, parts of which are still preserved.

During construction work in 1899, foundation walls of the convent church were excavated. It was a single-nave, Gothic church with a three-sided choir closure, located close to the eastern edge of the plateau, above the retaining wall, and oriented with its choir to the northeast. The area of the church is now located in the vicinity of the Klosterhof restaurant.
