Frauenalb Abbey

The monastery of Frauenalb was founded around 1190 by the Counts of Eberstein as a noble Benedictine convent. It was consecrated to the Saints Mary, John the Baptist, Peter, and Paul. The monastery exclusively admitted daughters from noble families and housed up to thirty convent members, often at a young age. The Vogtland of the monastery passed to the Margraves of Baden in the 14th century. In 1508, a fire destroyed large parts of the complex, including the abbey, the convent, the dormitory, and the refectory; only the church and the infirmary remained. After reconstruction, Frauenalb was plundered in the Peasants' War in 1525 but soon regained its former prosperity due to its extensive possessions. In 1598, the monastery was dissolved by Margrave Ernst Friedrich, but during the Thirty Years' War, it was reoccupied by Benedictine nuns in 1631. Following another demolition of the convent building in 1696, a new three-story building was erected by 1704. Under Abbess Gertrudis von Ichtrazheim, a new double-towered monastery church was completed in 1751. The secularization in 1803 led to the final dissolution of the monastery.

The Frauenalb monastery is located in the district of Marxzell in the Karlsruhe district, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, at an altitude of approximately 320 meters above sea level.

Today, Frauenalb is a monastery ruin surrounded by a few houses. Not far from the ruin, on the monastery path between Frauenalb and Bad Herrenalb, the historical border between Baden and Württemberg is marked, where there is also a "Zollhäusle" (customs house).
