Kloster Frauenbreitungen

The origins of the monastery lie in the establishment of a hospital in 1137 on properties belonging to the Benedictine Abbey of Hersfeld. A church was consecrated in 1148. As early as 1150, a double monastery for brothers and sisters was founded, adhering to the rules of the Augustinian Canons. Witnesses to the founding charter, including the provost of the Premonstratensian Abbey of Veßra, indicate that the foundation was already associated with the Premonstratensian Order early on. From 1168, the monastery focused on the sisterhood, signaling a separation from the male convent. These Premonstratensian nuns held lands west of the Werra. Around 1220, the canonical ties to the Premonstratensian Abbey of Veßra were solidified. The name Frauenbreitungen is documented since 1285. In 1514, the nuns adopted the Benedictine rule. A large winged altar from 1518 is attributed to the monastery. During the Peasants' War in 1525, the monastery suffered severe damage and was likely secularized in 1528.

Frauenbreitungen Monastery was situated on the western bank of the Werra, opposite Herrenbreitungen, in the historic County of Henneberg. Today, the area belongs to the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district in Thuringia.

Of the former monastic buildings, the Romanesque lower part of the St. Marienkirche tower is preserved today, serving as a testament to the past.
