Frauental Abbey

The church building was extensively renovated in the 20th century. The actual worship space is located in the "upper church" in the single-nave, 34-meter long and eight-meter wide nave. Three late Gothic saint figures are displayed there. The former nuns' gallery now houses a museum on the history of the formerly independent village of Frauental.

In the "lower church" below, the burial place of the Lords of Hohenlohe-Brauneck was located. In this crypt church with a ribbed vault, some frescoes are preserved above the altar arch, which were discovered during renovations in 1962 and show Jesus and the twelve apostles. A curiosity of the church are two bodies from the 18th century, mummified by natural influences.

The nunnery was founded in 1232 by Konrad and Gottfried von Hohenlohe-Brauneck, who resided at the nearby Brauneck Castle, and comprised about 600 hectares of land at the time of its foundation. The lands were later expanded. After the extinction of the noble line in 1390, the monastery came into the possession of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach. During the German Peasants' War, the monastery was plundered and set on fire several times by peasants in May 1525. Most of the monastery, including the high altar of the abbey church, was destroyed in the process. In 1548, Frauental was secularized.
