Home for the elderly

The Monastery of Friedenweiler, a historic complex in the Breisgau Hochschwarzwald, Baden-Württemberg, is situated at an elevation of approximately 902 meters above sea level. It was originally a Benedictine nunnery and later a Cistercian nunnery, with a history dating back to the 12th century.

History+

The foundation of the nunnery of Friedenweiler occurred between 1123 and 1139. It emerged after an exchange of properties between the monasteries of St. Georgen and Reichenau, in which St. Georgen acquired the location of Friedenweiler. Initially managed as a priory of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Georgen in the Black Forest, it was overseen by a magistra and was closely associated with the clearing activities in the southeastern Black Forest. In 1570, Cistercian nuns from Lichtenthal Abbey moved into the vacant buildings, and the ties to St. Georgen ceased in 1578. The monastery was secularized in 1802 and became the property of the Fürstenberg family, who used it as a castle. Later, it served as a children's sanatorium and has been utilized as a nursing home since 1989.

It houses a high altar with a central painting of the Assumption of Mary by Georg Samuel Schilling. The organ, built in 1892, was restored in 2010. The monastery complex itself has been used as a nursing home since 1989.
