Kloster Friedland

The founding of Friedland Monastery, originally named Vredeland, occurred after 1230 as part of the German eastward expansion. It served as a convent for the Brandenburg nobility, particularly for unmarried daughters, and supported the development of the March of Brandenburg. Strategically positioned on a peninsula between Klostersee and Kietzer See on the edge of the Oderbruch, the Ascanians used the monastery to secure the northeastern corner of the Löcknitz-Stobberow line. This line separated the Barnim possessions of Zinna Monastery from the Diocese of Lebus. With extensive landholdings, including ten villages, twenty individual estates, and eight lakes, the abbey was among the wealthiest monasteries in the March. Following its secularization in 1540, the monastic properties were confiscated by the sovereign and subsequently converted into a representative manor house.

Friedland Monastery is situated in Altfriedland, a municipality in the Märkisch-Oderland district of Brandenburg, Germany. It lies in the northeastern corner of the Märkische Schweiz Nature Park, nestled between Klostersee and Kietzer See.

Of the original monastic buildings, only the ruins of the refectory, remnants of a cloister, and the nave of the early Gothic fieldstone church remain today. The church is currently used as an Evangelical village church. These preserved structures, alongside Chorin, are considered the most architecturally significant medieval monastic buildings in the region and are protected as historical monuments.
