Gars Abbey

The origins of Kloster Gars date back to approximately 770. It was dissolved in 1803 during the secularization. The monastery is dedicated to Saints Mary and Radegundis. After a period of dissolution, it was re-established in 1858 by the Redemptorists and has since been a monastery of this order. From 1907 to 1973, it housed a Philosophical-Theological College for the education of Redemptorists from the Munich monastic province. The early Baroque monastery church, built under the direction of Christoph Zuccalli, is considered an early example of Baroque architecture in Germany.

Kloster Gars is situated in Gars am Inn, a municipality in the Upper Bavarian district of Mühldorf am Inn. The complex is located at an elevation of approximately 448 meters above sea level.

Today, in addition to the Redemptorist monastery, the building complex also accommodates classrooms and administrative offices for a state gymnasium, as well as an institute for teacher training. The monastery church contains the tomb of the beatified Redemptorist Kaspar Stangassinger.
