Geisenfeld Abbey

The Geisenfeld Monastery was founded between 1030 and 1037 by Count Eberhard von Ebersberg. The Benedictine abbey, dedicated to Saints Mary and Zeno, grew to become one of the largest and wealthiest monasteries in Bavaria at the time. Its extensive landholdings included 189 properties in surrounding villages by 1752, as well as lands in Gaimersheim, Langquaid, and even a vineyard in Austria. Large forest and field areas also belonged to the monastery's possessions. The abbey operated various crafts such as a brewery, saddlery, mill, bakery, and an apothecary. In 1336, Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian is said to have granted the monastery lower jurisdiction, which remained in effect until its secularization. In the 15th century, the Melk monastic reform was implemented. During the Thirty Years' War, the monastery was plundered in 1632, and its buildings were severely damaged in 1648. At the beginning of the 18th century, extensive reconstruction began under Abbess Constantia Jäger, with the foundation stone for the renovation laid in 1701. The monastery church was renovated from 1728 to 1730 under Abbess Maria Cäcilia Weiß, and the south tower was raised. In the course of secularization, Geisenfeld Monastery was dissolved in 1803. The monastery church became the property of the Geisenfeld parish in 1804 and has since served as the parish church of St. Emmeram.

Geisenfeld Monastery is situated in the Bavarian municipality of Geisenfeld, which belongs to the district of Pfaffenhofen. The complex is located at an elevation of approximately 390 meters above sea level.

The former monastery church underwent extensive renovation in the 1970s and 1980s and now shines in its historical splendor. The other former monastery buildings in the immediate vicinity are currently used for public offices.
