The Georgenberg Monastery, once a Premonstratensian foundation, was located near Bad Rodach in the Bavarian region of Coburg. Its history is closely intertwined with the Diocese of Bamberg and attests to a modest yet enduring presence in the area.
History+
The origins of Georgenberg Monastery date back to approximately 1120, when the Countesses Palatine Agnes and Adelheid von Horburg transferred Georgenberg and other properties in Bad Rodach to the Diocese of Bamberg. Bishop Otto the Saint of Bamberg initially planned to establish a Benedictine provostry there. However, in 1135, this “Zelle Rothaha” was gifted to Veßra Monastery for support. Bishop Wigger of Brandenburg consecrated the chapel built on Georgenberg in 1149 in honor of Saint George. Throughout its existence, the monastery remained a comparatively minor outpost of the mother monastery of Veßra. From the 14th century onwards, the chapel was likely attended by only a single priest from Veßra, who held the title of provost. Following the secularization during the Reformation, Elector Johann Friedrich I of Saxony gifted all possessions of the provostry in 1540 to Captain Matthes von Wallenrod. Two years later, in 1542, the town of Rodach acquired the former provostry for 4000 guilders. The monastery buildings were demolished around 1550, and the stones were used to reinforce the town wall. Only parts of the monastery's foundations on the eastern part of the mountain plateau remained.

The former Georgenberg Monastery was situated in the Coburg region of Bavaria, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 356 meters above sea level.
