Germerode Abbey

The foundation of Kloster Germerode occurred before 1144/1145 as a proprietary monastery of the Counts of Bilstein. Count Rugger II of Bilstein established it as a regulated double monastery for canons and canonesses of the Premonstratensian Order. The church, dedicated to Mary and Walburgis, was constructed between 1150 and 1170. After approximately one hundred years, Germerode continued as a pure nunnery. Around 1220, the refectory was completed, housing administrative and dining rooms on the ground floor and the nuns' dormitory on the upper floor. The monastery's heyday peaked around 1350, followed by a gradual decline. With the introduction of the Reformation in Hesse, the monastery was dissolved in 1527 and converted into a landgravial bailiwick. Apart from the church, all monastic buildings were subsequently used for agricultural purposes.

Kloster Germerode is located in the Germerode district of the Meißner municipality in the Werra-Meißner district, Hesse, Germany. It stands at an elevation of approximately 316 m above sea level.

Today, apart from the Romanesque monastery church, no other original monastic buildings remain. A conference center operates in the former domain tenant's house, the gatehouse. The Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck also maintains a pastoral office for meditation and spiritual life within the former monastery complex.
