Gottesberg Abbey

The origins of Gottesberg Monastery date back to 1704, when an endowment was made for the church on Gottesberg. In 1709, a Holy Sepulchre Chapel, a staircase, and a hermitage were built. The patronage of the complex was the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. A brotherhood of the good death, founded in 1712, was dedicated to the agony of Christ. From 1763, three brothers of the Tertiaries, a community of the 3rd Order of Penitents and a branch of the Paulaner, settled on Gottesberg. These brothers committed not to collect donations and not to acquire real estate. They earned their livelihood through crafts such as wool spinning and weaving.
