The former Premonstratensian monastery of Gottstatt is located in Orpund, in the canton of Bern, Switzerland. It is a historically significant site that still bears witness to its long history today.
History+
The origins of Gottstatt Monastery date back to the mid-13th century. After an initial failed attempt in 1247, the monastery was founded in 1255 by Count Rudolf I of Neuchâtel-Nidau. It was dedicated to the Mother of God, Mary. The Latin name Locum Dei, later known in German as Gotstat, indicates the spiritual significance of the place. In the course of the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved in 1528. After secularization, the property was sold to private individuals in 1803. Since 1965, the Reformed parish has gradually acquired parts of the former monastery grounds.
