The former Cistercian convent, Gravenhorst Monastery, is located in Gravenhorst, a district of Hörstel in the Steinfurt district, North Rhine-Westphalia. It is one of the few almost completely preserved monastic complexes in northern Germany and today serves as a center for culture and gastronomy.

History+

The foundation of Gravenhorst Monastery took place in 1256 by the knight Konrad von Brochterbeck and his wife Amalgarde von Budde. They endowed it with extensive landholdings. Their daughter Oda became the first abbess and successfully increased the monastery's possessions. Despite lacking official recognition from the Cistercian order, the community asserted itself against secular encroachments and internal disputes with the General Chapter, which disapproved of the Gravenhorst nuns' independence.
