Kloster Grünau, also known as Kartause Grünau, is a former Carthusian monastery located in the Main-Spessart region of Bavaria. It was the oldest Carthusian charterhouse in Franconia and was referred to by the monks as “Nova Cella”.

History+

The foundation of Kloster Grünau took place in 1328 by Elisabeth von Hohenlohe, daughter of a Count of Wertheim. The endowment served as an atonement for a hunting accident that resulted in the death of her husband, Gottfried von Hohenlohe-Röttingen. The Carthusians from Mainz subsequently received the locality of Schollbrunn for the monastery's establishment. Dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Lawrence, and Saint Nicholas, the monastery quickly developed despite a small number of monks, as several localities were subordinated to it, and it received tithes from parishes and chapels. During the Peasants' War in 1525, the complex was plundered, and the monks fled. The Reformation led to the dissolution of the monastery in 1557 and the expulsion of the last prior, as the Counts of Wertheim embraced Luther's teachings. The grounds were transferred to the Wertheim Hospital. A re-establishment of Carthusian monks occurred in 1629, but the Swedish conquest of the land in 1631 led to its renewed abandonment. After the Swedish withdrawal, the monastery was re-established in 1635. It was finally dissolved in 1803 during the secularization and came into the possession of the Counts of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg.
