Hadmersleben Monastery, a former Benedictine nunnery, is located in Hadmersleben, a district of Oschersleben in Saxony-Anhalt. This building is now an important stop on the Romanesque Road and houses a school.

History+

The monastery of Hadmersleben was founded in 961, with the founding charter even bearing the signature of the six-year-old King Otto II. A copy of the founding charter of the Archdiocese of Magdeburg from 968 recalls the disputes between Emperor Otto I and Bernhard of Halberstadt, the founder of the monastery. Bernhard refused to cede Magdeburg as an archdiocese, which led to his early death in 968 and earned him the nickname "Ironhead." King Otto III granted the monastery a total of 24 localities in 994. After a period of decline, during which the piety of the nuns was described as "completely extinguished," the monastery experienced a new upswing under Abbess Sofia I. In 1160, the construction of the Romanesque chapter house began.
