Haina Abbey

The origins of Haina Monastery date back to around 1144, with an earlier monastic foundation on the Aulesburg. After several unsuccessful attempts to establish this initial settlement, the Cistercian abbey was re-founded in 1188 as the fourth daughter house of the Cistercian Abbey of Altenberg near Cologne. In 1201, the convent acquired the village of Haina, and the monastery was finally relocated there in 1215. This led to the dissolution of the village and its transformation into a monastic estate. Particularly after the entry of Count Heinrich III of Reichenbach in 1231, the monastery experienced a period of prosperity and acquired extensive scattered properties. Construction of the monastic church began around 1216, with the choir consecrated in 1224. The High Gothic tracery windows, which emerged from around 1240, are remarkable. The nave was built as a hall church from the mid-13th century but was only completed in 1328. The Gothic frescoes and the wall tabernacle from the 14th century are of significant art-historical importance. The monastery was secularized in 1527 during the Reformation.

Haina Monastery is located in the Waldeck-Frankenberg region of Hesse, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 333 meters above sea level.

The Gothic monastic complex now serves as a Centre for Social Psychiatry. The church continues to impress with its High Gothic frescoes and stands as a testament to medieval architecture. The Stamford Garden frames the complex.
