Hamersleben Abbey

The monastery was founded in 1107/1108 in Osterwieck by Bishop Reinhard. Already in 1112, it was relocated to Hamersleben due to extensive land donations from the noble ladies Thietburg and Mathilde. These donations, which extended into the Altmark, formed the economic basis for the foundation's capacity, evident in the construction of the collegiate church, completed before 1140, and an outstanding scriptorium. From its inception, the monastery held extensive administrative and legal powers as a manorial lordship and achieved considerable independence from external influences in the 12th century. Although it originally existed as a double monastery, the admission of women was prohibited in 1238 by Bishop Ludolf I of Halberstadt. After a period of decline in importance, the foundation was reformed in 1452 and joined the Windesheim Congregation. During this time, debts were reduced, and its possessions were expanded. In 1525, the collegiate foundation was plundered by peasants, and in 1548, it suffered further looting by the Magdeburgers, which particularly affected the library and inventory. The monastery adhered to the Catholic faith and became Swedish war booty from 1633–1649. After the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, it became part of Prussia. As part of the secularization, Hamersleben Monastery was dissolved in 1804. Its extensive landholdings were managed by the state, the library and archives were dispersed, the conventuals were pensioned, and the Romanesque collegiate church was handed over to the Catholic community for use.

The former monastery is situated in Hamersleben in the Börde region of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 84 meters above sea level.

The collegiate church of St. Pankratius, named after the holy martyr Pankratius, now belongs to the Diocese of Magdeburg and is owned by the Cultural Foundation of Saxony-Anhalt. Extensive construction work on the roof of the church's main nave was carried out until the end of 2018.
