Hedingen Abbey

The origins of Hedingen Monastery date back to the first half of the 14th century, when it was founded as a Dominican Tertiary monastery and first documented in 1338. In the late 16th century, the Dominican convent was dissolved due to moral decay. The buildings subsequently served as Sigmaringen's city hospital until 1624, before Franciscan Observants took over the complex. In 1770, a public Latin school was established there, which was expanded into a gymnasium six years later. French troops plundered the monastery in 1796. After secularization in 1806, it fell to the Princes of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and was finally dissolved in 1816.
