Kloster Heilig-Kreuz

The Heilig-Kreuz Monastery, a remarkable complex in the Saarbrücken regional association, is the only establishment of the Redemptoristines in Germany. This modern sacred building, protected as a monument since its construction, is distinguished by its unique architecture, which harmoniously blends into the hilly landscape of the Saarland.
History+
The foundation stone for the Heilig-Kreuz Monastery was laid in 1956, and construction was completed by 1960. The design originated from the Hungarian stained-glass artist and architect Gyórgy Lehoczky, who also created the impressive stained-glass windows of the monastery church. The construction integrated modern elements, particularly arch forms that adapt to the surrounding nature, while maintaining the traditional architectural style of a monastery. The monastery church, with its striking, curved roof, is a homage to Le Corbusier's pilgrimage church in Ronchamp. It is designed as a double church, with the altar area at the intersection, and one nave serving the sisters and the other the community. The Redemptoristines, an order founded in Italy in 1731, maintain a contemplative way of life here.
Location+
The Heilig-Kreuz Monastery is located in Püttlingen, a town in the Saarbrücken regional association in the federal state of Saarland, Germany. It is situated in a picturesque, hilly environment, not far from the older Kreuzkapelle.
On site+
Today, the Heilig-Kreuz Monastery is an active place of retreat and spirituality. The Redemptoristines live a secluded life here but also offer conversations and days of silence for visitors. The community supports itself, among other things, through embroidery of paraments and baking of communion wafers. The monastery church houses four bells, cast between 1958 and 1960 by the Saarlouiser Glockengießerei. Particularly noteworthy are the large stained-glass windows in the altar area, including a round window depicting the parable of the wise and foolish virgins, a Trinity window, and a Marian window.
