The Holy Cross Monastery was founded in 1220. It was affiliated with the Cistercian Order and dedicated to Saint Mary and the Holy Cross. Over the centuries, the monastery significantly influenced the spiritual and cultural life in Meißen and its surroundings. The monastic community existed until the mid-16th century, when the monastery was secularized and dissolved in 1568 as part of the Reformation.
