The monastery of Heiligkreuz was founded around 1310 as a donation from the House of Reuß. The convent was mainly composed of women from the founding family and the regional nobility. Over the course of its existence, the monastery acquired extensive property, including forty farms subject to taxes. In the course of the Reformation, the first Lutheran visitation took place on September 8, 1533, at which time eleven nuns, in addition to the abbess, lived in the monastery. By 1544, the monastery buildings and their associated estates were completely sold off and fell to the treasury, marking the end of the monastic community.

The former Cistercian nunnery Heiligkreuz, located in the Kloster district of Saalburg-Ebersdorf in the Saale-Orla district of Thuringia, was once an important spiritual institution in the region. Although only a few remnants of its original structure are visible today, it bears witness to a long history and the influence of the Cistercian order in Central Germany.
