Heilsbronn Abbey

Catechetical Office of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria

Heilsbronn Monastery, a former Cistercian abbey, is located in the town of Heilsbronn in the Franconian part of Bavaria. It is known as a burial site for the House of Hohenzollern.

History+

The founding of Heilsbronn Monastery took place in 1132 by Bishop Otto I of Bamberg. From 1297 to 1625, the monastery's minster served as the final resting place for members of the Hohenzollern family. In the course of the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved in 1578. Four years later, in 1582, the monastery school was transformed into a princely school. This princely school was merged with the Ansbach Gymnasium in 1737. The lay church of St. Catherine was demolished in 1773, on whose foundation the Katharinenturm, also known as the Dicker Turm, was erected.
