Heisterbach Abbey (Königswinter)

The foundation of Heisterbach Abbey dates back to 1189, when twelve Cistercian monks from Himmerod Abbey were sent to the region. They initially occupied the vacant buildings of an Augustinian order on the Petersberg before relocating in 1192 to the valley below the mountain, where they founded Heisterbach Abbey. The patronage of the abbey was dedicated to Saint Mary and Saint Peter. In 1237, the late Romanesque abbey church was consecrated, its architecture characterized by an ambulatory with a radiating chapel. The monastery's heyday ended with its secularization in 1803, after which the abbey was dissolved.
