Herrevad Abbey, a former Cistercian monastery, is located in Skåne, Sweden, near Ljungbyhed. It played a role in the spread of the Cistercian order in Scandinavia.

History+

The foundation of Herrevad Abbey took place in 1144 by Archbishop Eskil of Lund, directly as a daughter monastery of the French mother abbey of Cîteaux. From Herrevad, further monasteries such as Tvis, Holme, and Løgumkloster were later founded. The original Romanesque basilica of sandstone, a three-aisled structure 53 meters long, begun in 1158, was rebuilt with bricks after a fire in 1291. In 1565, the monastery was confiscated by the Crown and subsequently fell into disrepair. By the end of the 16th century, the monastic buildings were demolished to provide building material for the Caroli Church in Malmö.
