Herz Jesu Abbey

The Heart of Jesus Monastery in Eichstätt, Bavaria, was a former convent of the Augustinian Canonesses B.M.V. and represents a remarkable example of Baroque architecture in the region.
History+
The monastery, dedicated to the Heart of Jesus, was founded in 1711. The foundation stone for the monastic building was laid in 1712, but construction initially progressed slowly. In 1716, the first sisters moved into the still unfinished building. The monastery church, a significant work of the Baroque period, was built between 1719 and 1722. Its consecration in June 1723 marked the completion of the founding phase. From the outset, the nuns were dedicated to education, operating two schools: one for local girls and a boarding school for noble girls. During the secularization period, the Heart of Jesus Monastery was initially the only Eichstätt monastery not dissolved, due to its schools. However, its final dissolution was ordered by royal decree in October 1809. The monastic buildings and property were sold between 1810 and 1811, and the church later served as a warehouse and museum.
