Hillersleben Abbey

The Hillersleben Monastery, a former Benedictine abbey, is located in the Börde region of Saxony-Anhalt. The complex, whose origins date back to the 10th century, is now an important archaeological monument and part of the Romanesque Road, with the former monastery church being used by the Protestant parish.
History+
The Hillersleben Monastery was probably founded around 960 as a nunnery. After its destruction around the year 1000, the complex was rebuilt in 1022 under Archbishop Gero of Magdeburg as an archiepiscopal proprietary monastery. In 1096, it was settled by Benedictine monks from Ilsenburg. In 1577, the convent adopted the Augsburg Confession. Between 1628 and 1632, the monastery was Catholic once more, before being taken over by the Magdeburg Cathedral Chapter. The dissolution and secularization of the monastery occurred in 1632. The monastic estate was converted into a domain in 1687 and changed hands several times in the 20th century, including to the German Army Administration and Soviet forces, before being divided in 1951 as part of land reform.

The Hillersleben Monastery is situated in the Börde region of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 60 meters above sea level.

The former monastery church now serves as a place of worship for the Protestant parish of Hillersleben. Remains of the cloister and the east wing of the original monastery buildings are preserved, some of which are used as a community room or residences. The church itself displays a blend of Romanesque and Neo-Romanesque elements, resulting from various construction phases and restorations.
