Himmerod Abbey

The foundation of Himmerod Abbey took place in 1134 by Bernard of Clairvaux. Initially located near Winterbach on the Kyll, the convent was relocated to the Salm Valley at Himmerod in 1135 due to flooding. It was the fourteenth Cistercian monastery and the first in Germany directly founded by Bernard of Clairvaux. The Romanesque abbey church was consecrated in 1178. Over the centuries, the monastery acquired extensive landholdings and founded Heisterbach Abbey as a daughter monastery in 1189. In the 17th century, a comprehensive reconstruction of the monastic complex took place, and in the 18th century, a Baroque abbey church was built. In 1802, Himmerod Abbey was dissolved by the French government during secularization. The buildings fell into disrepair and were used as a quarry until German Cistercian monks re-established the monastery in 1922.

Himmerod Abbey is located in the Bernkastel-Wittlich district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It lies in the Salm Valley, nestled between Eisenschmitt and Großlittgen, at an elevation of approximately 300 meters above sea level.

Today, Himmerod Abbey is a place of tranquility and contemplation. The abbey church, rebuilt in the 20th century, and the preserved historical buildings bear witness to the site's long history. A guesthouse and a shop are located near the monastery.
