Hohenwart Abbey

Hohenwart Abbey was founded in 1074 by Count Ortolf and his sister Wiltrudis from the noble family of the Counts of Hohenwart. The abbey church was consecrated in the same year to Saint George, with Mary and Peter as secondary patrons. This noble family, which died out with its founders, was related to the Counts of Dießen and Andechs. The abbey was dissolved in 1803 as part of the secularization. The former abbey church has since served as the parish church of St. George. As no buyers were found for the abbey buildings, the nuns were initially able to remain there. Since 1876, the buildings have been owned by the Regens Wagner Foundations Dillingen and are managed by Dillingen Franciscans. Valuable testimonies from the time of the Benedictine nunnery have been preserved, including the "Golden Book of Hohenwart" and other historical books, which are now kept in the Bavarian State Library. The original Romanesque basilica was destroyed by fire in 1895, but parts such as St. Peter's Chapel, the cloister, and a Romanesque cellar vault still bear witness to the original construction. A special gem is the abbey pharmacy, redesigned in Rococo style in 1739, with its delicate stucco ceiling depicting motifs of monastic healing arts.

Hohenwart Abbey is situated in the market town of Hohenwart in the Bavarian district of Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm. It lies at an elevation of approximately 440 meters above sea level.

Today, the former Benedictine nunnery serves as the regional center for disability assistance, Regens Wagner Hohenwart. Here, people of all ages with various disabilities receive diverse support services.
