Kloster Holzen, a former Benedictine abbey for women, is located in Allmannshofen, Bavaria, northwest of Augsburg. The complex currently serves as a center for people with disabilities and also hosts a conference hotel.

History+

The foundation of Kloster Holzen dates back to 1174. Initially conceived as a Benedictine double monastery, the male convent was dissolved in the 15th century, after which it developed into a purely female monastery. Throughout its history, the monastery suffered several destructions, including during the Peasants' War and the Schmalkaldic War. In the late 17th century, between 1696 and 1704, the complex was rebuilt on the Karlsberg, with the monastery church of St. John the Baptist completed in 1704. This church is notable for its rich Baroque interior, featuring stucco work by Benedikt Vogel and figures by Ehrgott Bernhard Bendl. In 1804, the monastery was dissolved as part of the secularization. The patron saints of the monastery are Mary and Peter.
