Holzkirchen Abbey

The foundation of Kloster Holzkirchen dates back to before 748, specifically to the mid-8th century. It was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Saint Sixtus. In 775, Drudmunt, the founder's son, transferred the monastery to Charlemagne, who then placed it under the imperial abbey of Fulda. Although initially settled by monks from Fulda, it soon gained independence and operated its own monastic school. During the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved in 1552, but its possessions were returned to Fulda in 1561, though monastic life did not resume. After a period under the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg and the expulsion of monks by Swedish soldiers in 1631, the current monastery church was constructed between 1728 and 1730 by Balthasar Neumann. A new convent was re-established only in 1759. The final secularization occurred in 1802/03.

Kloster Holzkirchen is located in Holzkirchen, a district of Würzburg in the federal state of Bavaria, Germany. It stands at an elevation of approximately 201 meters above sea level.

The former monastic complex is enclosed by walls on three sides, with the Aalbach forming its northern boundary. The Baroque church, designed by Balthasar Neumann, whose dome was destroyed by fire in the 19th century and later reconstructed, is situated at the northwest corner. Since 2003, the property has been utilized as the Benediktushof, an interdenominational and interreligious seminar and conference center.
