Ilsenburg Abbey

The Ilsenburg Monastery was founded in the second half of the 11th century on the site of a presumed hunting lodge. King Henry II gifted the Elysynaburg and other properties to the Diocese of Halberstadt in 1003. Bishop Arnulf of Halberstadt used this donation to establish a proprietary monastery and called monks from Fulda to Ilsenburg. The abbey, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, flourished from the late 11th to the 13th century. During this period, Ilsenburg became one of the wealthiest Benedictine monasteries between the Weser and Elbe rivers due to extensive landholdings. Under Abbot Herrand, a proponent of the Gorze Reform, the monastery gained spiritual significance from around 1070 and influenced other Benedictine abbeys. The monastery church was consecrated on June 5, 1087, and was notable for its three-aisled choir with three apses. Between 1120 and 1176, the cloister buildings were rebuilt after a fire. During the German Peasants' War in 1525, parts of the monastery were destroyed, and with Count Wolfgang zu Stolberg's assumption of government in 1538, the monastery embraced the Reformation. The official dissolution of the monastery occurred in 1631.

Ilsenburg Monastery is situated in the town of Ilsenburg in the Harz region, a part of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It stands at an elevation of approximately 279 meters above sea level.

The monastery church has been owned by the town of Ilsenburg since 1974 and has undergone extensive restoration. The preserved remains of the cloister buildings have been owned by the Ilsenburg Monastery Foundation since 2000.
