Ingolstadt Abbey

The Ingolstadt Monastery is a monastery of the Franciscan Reformists in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, in the Diocese of Eichstätt.

The monastery, dedicated to Maria Himmelfahrt (Assumption of Mary), was founded in 1275 by Ludwig II the Strict, Duke of Upper Bavaria; it was dissolved in 1802 during the secularization. Initially, the monastery served as a central monastery, from 1827 it stood empty and was plundered. The Franciscans moved to a house in the city center at today's Viktualienmarkt (Monastery above the Schutter Ingolstadt). In 1837, the buildings became the property of the Fortress Construction Directorate, which, among other things, rented them to the NSDAP in 1943. In 1945, the complex, including the Franciscan church which was temporarily used as a garrison church, was returned to the Franciscans, as their previous monastery in the city center had been destroyed. From September 1998, a model of a Franciscan-fraternal community was realized in the monastery for several years. At the end of 2005, the Franciscans left the monastery, and since the beginning of 2006, the Capuchins have been here.
