On the Michelsberg in Kelheim, Bavaria, is Kelheim Abbey, a former Franciscan monastery. It is a Baroque complex housing a church and a museum.

History+

The Franciscan monastery, dedicated to the Holy Virgin Mary, was founded between 1461 and 1471 by Johann IV and Sigmund, together with the citizens of Kelheim. Around 1635, it temporarily served as a hospice, otherwise as a convent. The monastery was dissolved in 1802 during the secularization. Subsequently, a brewery and an inn were established in the monastery buildings. The former monastery church has been used for services again since 1878 and now also houses an organ museum.
