Keppel Abbey (Allenbach)

The origins of Keppel Abbey date back to before 1236, when it was founded by Friedrich vom Hain as a canoness monastery. It was first documented in 1239. Keppel served as a Premonstratensian nunnery and later as a secular convent for unmarried daughters of the nobility. After the Reformation, it was converted into an Evangelical women's convent in 1594. In the 19th century, the convent was dissolved under Napoleonic rule and later fell to Prussia. From 1871, a girls' school with a boarding school was established here, which developed into a lyceum and upper lyceum, offering the Abitur from 1926.
