Abbey Kleinburlo

The founding of Kleinburlo Monastery occurred around 1360 on lands donated by Konrad Strick and his wife Haseke to Mariengarden Monastery in Burlo. The aim was to establish a Wilhelmine settlement between Darfeld, Horstmar, and Eggerode. In 1407, Kleinburlo separated from its mother monastery Großburlo and was elevated to an independent priory, counting 22 monks at that time. In the mid-15th century, the Wilhelmines of both monasteries joined the Cistercians, with Kamp Monastery serving as the mother house. They belonged to the Colligatio Galiaensis, a group known for its strict adherence to monastic rules. Kleinburlo experienced several periods of economic hardship, particularly during the Seven Years' War. Poverty led to the dissolution of the convent in 1798. After the secularization in 1803, the monastery was initially leased by Trappists and finally dissolved by the Napoleonic government in 1811. The complex subsequently changed ownership several times.

The former Kleinburlo Monastery was located in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany, near the town of Darfeld.

Today, there are hardly any visible remains of the original monastery complex. The church and the monastery were demolished, with the exact demolition dates varying. Only a few ancillary buildings, such as the Burloer Mill and the brewery, have been preserved. The brewery is now used as a stable building. A Madonna bell from the monastery, dating from 1765, has been in the bell tower of St. Margareta in Asbeck since 1804.
