Königsfelden Monastery

The founding of Königsfelden Monastery took place in 1309 by the Habsburgs. It was conceived as a double monastery for Poor Clares and Franciscans, with the Franciscans responsible for pastoral care. The endowment by Queen Dowager Elisabeth of Gorizia-Tyrol served as a memorial to the assassination of her husband, King Albert I, the previous year. From 1317, Albert's daughter Agnes of Hungary resided at the monastery, contributing to its flourishing period through astute land purchases and economic skill. Following Bern's conquest of western Aargau and the introduction of the Reformation in 1528, the monastery was secularized. Subsequently, the building complex served as the residence for the Bernese bailiffs before being converted into a psychiatric clinic from 1868. The monastery church has been part of Museum Aargau since 2009.

The former Königsfelden Monastery is situated in Brugg in the canton of Aargau, Switzerland, at an elevation of approximately 363 meters above sea level.

Today, the building complex houses a psychiatric clinic. The historic monastery church, with its impressive stained-glass windows, is part of Museum Aargau and is open to the public. Parts of the Poor Clares' convent, such as the cloister, have been preserved, while only an archive vault remains of the Franciscan convent.
