Business premises, apartments

Kloster Kommern, a distinctive complex of red and yellow brick buildings, is situated in the center of Kommern, a district of the city of Mechernich in the Euskirchen region. Originally established as a social and medical center, it significantly shaped community life for decades.

History+

The origins of the monastery date back to the late 19th century. In 1885, construction began on the “Anstaltsgebäude zu Commern,” endowed by Anna Sibilla and Josef Abels. Two years later, in 1887, the Vincentian Sisters took over the institution, which became known as “St.-Vinzenz-Haus.” It served for inpatient and outpatient care for the sick and poor, including a maternity ward. Additionally, up to 15 nuns operated an orphanage, a kindergarten, and a sewing and handicraft school. Following the death of the founder Josef Abels in 1908, it was renamed “St.-Josefs-Haus.” Due to financial difficulties, the Vincentian Sisters closed the house in 1972 and sold it to the Catholic parish of St. Severinus for a symbolic D-Mark. The sisters relocated to a newly constructed building directly opposite, where they maintained a conference and retreat house until 2011. The main building of the former monastery underwent extensive renovation and was consecrated in 1983 as the new parish center for St. Severinus. A new organ in the chapel had already been consecrated in 1982. The parish center housed, among other facilities, a teaching kitchen for the women's community, a day center for the elderly, and a youth facility. Since 1989, the building has been listed as a historical monument.
