Ursulinenkloster Landsberg

The Landsberg am Lech Monastery, a historic monument in Bavaria, stands as a remarkable testament to monastic tradition and architectural evolution in Upper Bavaria. Originally founded as an Ursuline convent, it now serves as a Dominican convent and also houses secular institutions.
History+
The monastery's establishment in 1719 was initiated by Landsberg's mayor, J. Heilberger, who aimed to create an educational institution for young women. The Ursulines initially occupied townhouses in the old city center, where they erected a provisional monastery church between 1724 and 1725, designed by Dominikus Zimmermann. In the mid-18th century, specifically 1764/65, a new monastery wing with a church was built at Leonhardiplatz, based on plans by Munich court architect Johann Baptist Gunetzrhainer. The secularization in 1809 led to the dissolution of the monastery, though its associated school institute continued under secular management. In 1845, Dominican nuns from Augsburg took over the complex, continuing it as the Monastery of the Most Holy Trinity. In 1985, the Dominican nuns relocated to a larger complex in the eastern part of the city.
Location+
The monastery is situated in the Upper Bavarian town of Landsberg am Lech, at an elevation of approximately 591 meters above sea level. It belongs to the Diocese of Augsburg.
On site+
The former monastery buildings now accommodate a community college, a church-affiliated kindergarten, and a senior citizens' residence. The Dominican nuns continue their activities in a different building complex within the city.
