Lechfeld Abbey

The origins of Lechfeld Monastery date back to 1602, when a pilgrimage chapel was established. In 1624, the monastery was founded by Regina Imhof. Initially operating as a hospice of the Upper German (Strasbourg) Franciscan province, it was elevated to a convent in 1668. By 1715, the monastery developed into a study institution for aspiring clergy. Following the secularization in 1803, it was taken over by the Teutonic Order and used as a central or extinction monastery for Franciscans from dissolved monasteries, though it was no longer permitted to accept novices. As part of the secularization, the monastery passed to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1806. King Ludwig I of Bavaria authorized the continued existence of the Franciscan convent in 1830, where the Franciscans remained until its final dissolution in 1993. The monastery's patronage was dedicated to Mary.

Lechfeld Monastery is located in Klosterlechfeld, a municipality near Augsburg in Bavaria, Germany. The site is situated at an elevation of approximately 568 meters above sea level.

The Franciscans departed from the monastery in 1993. The former monastery library is now part of the collections of the Franciscan Monastery in Bolzano.
