Kloster Leeden

The women's monastery of Leeden was founded around 1240 by Count Otto von Tecklenburg. In 1252, the monastery itself sent nuns to settle the Segenstal Monastery in Vlotho. It was not until 1491 that Leeden was fully integrated into the Cistercian Order under the leadership of Bishop Konrad IV von Rietberg. In the course of the Reformation, the monastery was transformed into a secular women's collegiate foundation in 1538. This form of collegiate foundation existed until 1812, with a brief interruption from 1631 to 1633, when it temporarily served as a Poor Clares monastery.

Leeden Monastery is situated in Leeden, a district of Tecklenburg, in the Steinfurt district of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

The former monastery church now functions as an evangelical collegiate church. The preserved collegiate house, which previously served as the abbess's house, accommodates the Cistercian and Collegiate Museum Leeden. There, visitors can discover documents related to the founding and dissolution of the monastery, as well as information about life within the Leeden collegiate foundation.
