History+

The founding of Lehnin Monastery in 1180 by Margrave Otto I of Brandenburg served economic, political, and religious purposes. It was the first monastery in the March of Brandenburg and functioned as a house monastery and burial site for the Ascanians. The Cistercians played a crucial role in the consolidation and development of the young March of Brandenburg by attracting settlers and Christianizing the Slavic population. Lehnin was a daughter monastery of Morimond and sent monks from Sittichenbach. The monastery was secularized in 1542 during the Reformation.
