Lenzfried Abbey

Lenzfried Abbey is a former Observant Franciscan monastery in Lenzfried, a district of Kempten, a city in the Bavarian administrative region of Swabia.

The Franciscan monastery, dedicated to St. Bernardino of Siena, was founded by Heinrich Belzinger and other patrons in 1461. From 1548 to 1643, the monastery was dissolved, but Franciscan nuns looked after the monastery grounds. In 1649, a convent with 12 fathers moved back into the old monastery buildings, while the Franciscan nuns were able to move into their newly completed St. Anna monastery. A three-wing complex was built in 1683 by Hans Mayer and in 1765/67 by Joseph Galler. A new high altar was acquired from Lechfeld Abbey in 1748. The monastery was finally dissolved in 1805 during the secularization. The church and monastery complex were preserved. The monastery church of St. Magnus became a parish church, and the former monastery buildings housed the rectory and a lazaretto. From 1857, the Poor School Sisters of Our Lady dedicated themselves to teaching orphaned girls from the Lenzfried parish. This led to the establishment of a school, which has been under the patronage of the School Board of the Diocese of Augsburg since January 2003.

The church tower was completed by Hugo Höfl in 1892/3.
